Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan!
Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is the son of
Qawwal Farukh Ali Khan and nephew of the great Qawwali Legend Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan. Rahat was trained in classical music and qawwali under Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan beginning at a very tender age. Nusrat Fateh did not have a son of his own,
therefore,he started to train Rahat in music from an age when Rahat had a
pacifier in his mouth. Rahat took over Nusrat's Qawwali party(band) after his
death in 1997, and is now carrying on the family legacy of qawwali singing.
Nusrat once referred Rahat as "my eyes upon the world", Nusrat says his uncle
had a wish to make sufi music popular. Nusrat is trying to fulfill his uncle’s
wish - popularizing qawwali and sufi music by adding modern beats to them just
as his uncle did.
Rahat is often unjustly being compared with the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. But
the truth of the matter is that despite being trained by Nusrat Fateh Khan,
Rahat has a distinct voice of his own (high pitched, yet pleasant). Rahat may
have been been considered a shadow of Nusrat Fateh Ali initially, however, Rahat
is now beginning to shine due to his own unique style of singing. His songs from
Bollywood movies are turning into hits one after another. "Man Ki Lagan" from "Paap"
and "Jiya Dhadhak Dhadhak Jaye" from "Kalyug" have been chart toppers. His
latest hit, “Main Jahan Hoon” from “Namaste London” is fast hitting the top rank
as a unique composition.
Let’s enjoy some outstanding renditions by Rahat!
