Roop Kumar Rathod - A Self Made Singer and Music
Director!
Roop Kumar Rathod, son of
Pundit Chaturbhuj Rathod, a classical maestro started off in music with tabla
playing. He played tabla when Punkaj Udhas and Anup Jalota sang their ghazals
and bhajans on stage. Roop also played tabla for Shyam Benegals’ “ Discovery of
India” performed live on stage by legend Lata Mangeshkar.
In 1984, Roop gave up his passion of tabla playing for trying his vocal chords!
He did good with ghazal singing for a while. Roopkumar’s movie singing began
when he was introduced to the world as a playback singer by Laxmikant Pyarelal
in Angaar (1992). Filmmaker Shashilal Nair and music maker Laxmikant later gave
a try to this young singer in films like Bhairavi, Gumraah, Main Tera Aashiq
Hoon, Mohabbat Ki Arzoo and Tejaswini. Other music directors such as Anu Malik,
Nadeem shravan followed suit and gave Roop a few insignificant songs to sing but
nothing came his way that could bring out the best in Roop!
Roop Kumar’s opportunity to give a memorable number came with the movie Border
in which he sang ‘To Chalun’ and the Filmfare award winner ‘Sandesein Aate Hain’.
Since then, he has sung in over 50 movies under various top composers such as
Anu Malik (Hero , Hindustani, Champion, and Kareeb), Anand Milind (Dahek and
Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet), Vishal (Hu Tu Tu and Godmother), Raamlaxman (Hum Saath Saath
Hain), Jatin Lalit (Sarfarosh) Sanjeev Darshan (Aashiq), A. R. Rahman (Thakshak),
and Late Madan Mohan ( Veera Zaara).
Roop has also composed music for some movies such as Madhoshi (2004) Woh Tera
Naam Tha (2004) and Zeher (2005).
Roop Kumar Rathod may have taken longer than many other artists to reach the
level of recognition that he is receiving now. However, he did it on his own -
even without his own brother music director Shravan’s (of Nadeem Shravan)
support who was a well established music director in the 80’s and 90’s while
Roop was still struggling!
Roop Kumar is one example of a self made person, who deserves to be be commended
for his perseverance and talent!
